On November 15, 2015, J Clarke Richardson’s DECA team attended the DECA regional competition at Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby Ontario and did exceedingly well. For those who do not know DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America and it is an extracurricular program designed for secondary school students in Ontario to develop cultivate their leadership skills, organizational and teamwork skills. DECA is a business centred program. However, students with other interests are encouraged to join as well. The regional completion consisted of an exam and a case study, which could be tackled in a team of two or individually. JCR’s team consisted both teams and individual participants in the competition.
Despite the small size J Clarke Richardson’s DECA team, they did extremely well on the leaderboards with our very own Sukaina Jamil and Shelby Sooknanan winning the first place spot overall! Rafay Khan and John Chapman received the second place position and Omar Iqbal and Syed Amin received the third spot position. JCR’s DECA team took the cake at the regionals! Several other DECA members were in the top ten overall, top ten for the case study and top ten for the exam.
Mrs. McDonald, the teacher supervisor of DECA, said “the competition went really well. Several of our members placed very high positions in the leaderboard and we are looking forward to the DECA provincial competitions in February”.
If the regional competition is any indication of the provincials, J Clarke’s DECA team is definitely a team to watch out for on the provincial stage. We wish our DECA team the best of luck at the provincial competition in February!
