Zain Awan is a Grade 12 student who has accomplished many things this year. His passion for business has lead to him becoming the president of DECA, and had been nominated for valedictorian.
How did you become interested in your chosen field?
At first, I did not know which field to go into, I was very confused and challenged myself in taking a variety of different courses in my 11th grade, and in the end I felt that my heart was towards Medicine. The reasoning behind this is because of how I love to meet and work with new people and I love biology.
Will you pursue your hobbies and club activities after high school?
Yes I will. I love business and although I am going into medicine, I feel like I will somehow incorporate business into my life. I will definitely try to join the different clubs that I have been in throughout my school years and continue to expand my leadership skills and capabilities.
Who are some of your role models?
I would say my biggest role model is my older brother who was a former JCR graduate five years ago. He too went into high school and achieved a variety of leadership roles and made change in the school community.
What inspires/motivates you?
I motivate myself by trying to achieve the highest possible position I can by looking at the top people in the organization/class that I am in. I work hard to try and get as close to them as I can. In terms of inspiration, I like to read about successful people in life and the different barriers they faced in the past. Doing this makes me feel thankful for what I have and to work harder.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
I understand that anything can happen in life which can cause you to alter paths or change you. With that said, in five years I would love to see myself finishing up an MBA and being accepted to a medical school.
If I’m not mistaken, you’re the President of DECA. What sort of tasks does that role usually have?
The role of a president in any club/organization, means that you are the face of that specific group. With that in mind, I feel that a DECA president is one who is good at helping coordinate their executive team by assigning the appropriate tasks that they are capable of. Next, they are the person that everyone usually asks questions to, about the club. This would mean that the president of DECA should have experience in the club, as well as a little bit of education in business as it is a business club. Most of all, I feel like the DECA president, or any president, should be a person that people like to look up to and feel like they can depend on.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what’s one object you’d bring with you?
Interesting question! If I were stranded on an island, the one object I would probably like to bring with me is a fully charged phone so I can call for help and get out of there! Just kidding, I would probably bring a flame torch with me as fire and heat is key for survival. With a flame torch I can create a fire with firewood found in the island. Using that very fire I could cook food as well as filter water, and use the heat from the fire for warmth.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what’s one musical album you’d bring with you?
As weird as this sounds, I would probably bring a piano music album because of how the sound of a piano is quite soothing. Also, listening to the same rap/pop songs over and over again would probably get boring and tiring.
